What Is an NIE Number?

NIE stands for Número de Identidad de Extranjero, or Foreigner Identity Number. It is a personal, unique and exclusive number used by the Spanish authorities to identify foreign nationals.

It normally begins with the letter X, Y or Z, followed by seven digits and a final letter. Once assigned, the number remains associated with the same person. It does not change if the holder subsequently obtains a residence permit, renews a residence card or spends several years outside Spain.

An NIE may be required for many different transactions, including purchasing or selling a property, accepting an inheritance, incorporating a company, completing certain procedures before a Spanish notary, paying taxes or maintaining professional or financial relations with Spain.

However, having an NIE does not necessarily mean that you are legally resident in Spain. An NIE is an administrative identification number. By itself, it does not grant the right to live or work in Spain.

This distinction is extremely important. A person may have an NIE because they purchased a property in Spain without holding Spanish residence. Similarly, someone who obtains a Spanish residence permit will normally receive an NIE as part of that immigration procedure and may not need to request a separate assignment beforehand.

NIE, TIE and EU Registration Certificate: Important Differences

Many appointment problems occur because applicants confuse three different concepts: the NIE, the TIE and the EU Citizen Registration Certificate.

The NIE is the foreign national’s identification number.

The TIE, or Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero, is the physical identity card issued to certain non-EU foreign nationals who have obtained a Spanish residence authorisation or a stay authorisation lasting longer than six months. The card displays the holder’s NIE, photograph, type of authorisation and period of validity.

The EU Citizen Registration Certificate, sometimes informally called the “green NIE”, confirms the registration of a citizen of the European Union, European Economic Area or Switzerland who intends to reside in Spain for longer than three months. It involves a different procedure, application form and set of legal requirements.

Therefore, an Italian, French, German or other EU citizen moving to Spain may not simply need the assignment of an NIE. They may need to apply for the EU Citizen Registration Certificate using form EX-18 and prove that they meet the applicable employment, self-employment, study or financial requirements.

A non-EU national who has already been granted a residence permit will probably need a fingerprint appointment for the issuance of the TIE, rather than an NIE assignment appointment.

Who Can Request the Assignment of an NIE?

It is generally not sufficient to state that you would like an NIE in case you need it in the future. The application should explain the specific reason why the number is required and, whenever possible, include supporting documents.

The Best Time to Look for an Appointment in Barcelona

We have now reached the practical tip mentioned at the beginning of this article.

According to the pattern we have observed in Barcelona, new appointments for the specific procedure called “Asignación de NIE” — assignment of an NIE — are usually released on Fridays at approximately 7:30 a.m.

When the system follows this pattern, appointments may become available for dates in the near future, often during the following days or the next week.

The appointments are commonly assigned to the office identified in the system as CNP PSJ, ground floor, Passeig de Sant Joan 189, Barcelona. The official address of the immigration office is Passeig de Sant Joan 189–193, 08037 Barcelona.

Our practical recommendation is therefore to access the official appointment system shortly before 7:30 a.m. on Friday, have your passport and contact details ready, select the province of Barcelona and choose the procedure specifically identified as “Asignación de NIE.”

You must act quickly because the available appointments may be taken within a short time. Nevertheless, you should carefully check the information before confirming the booking. An appointment containing incorrect information or reserved for a different procedure may be useless.

This release time is not published as a permanent commitment by the Spanish authorities. It is a practical pattern that we have observed, and it may change without notice.

We cannot guarantee that appointments will be released every Friday, that they will always appear at exactly 7:30 a.m. or that they will always be assigned to the Passeig de Sant Joan office.

Most importantly, this advice applies specifically to NIE assignment appointments in Barcelona. It does not apply to fingerprint appointments, TIE issuance, EU Citizen Registration Certificates, letters of invitation, return authorisations or other police and immigration procedures.

What Should You Do After Booking the Appointment?

Once you have confirmed the appointment, immediately download the confirmation and check the date, time, office address, selected procedure and identity details.
